Last night, I watched some subbed DBZ for the first time, and I had to think about it.
It was the Bardock Special- and I had to mentally compare the dub and the sub.
Well, the most obvious thing is that dubbers add lots of really unnecessary chatter. The music was at times better, sometimes worse. The music used in the dub bardock saga was good. Though part of it is that I just enjoy that type of music anyways. The original was more true to the series, because it was part of it (duh).
However, its been a long time since I saw it for the first time, and this last time, which is post my CLAMP phase. And I have to say, I didn't find it nearly as sad after watching X.
That's another rant though.
There were parts of the dub storyline that I liked better- though it might be because I saw it first, I can't really say. In the sub, Bardock asks Goku to avenge him. In the dub, Bardock grows, and says he wishes he'd gotten to hold Goku while he had the chance. One is obviously more Saiya-jin, and in character- the other is a more sympathetic character, and its hard to decide which is better.
I say I like the dub because it makes Bardock more likeable. Again, its not IC for a Saiya-jin...
I've been working on a story called Bloodlines, literally for years now. It was based off the dub version. I recently started rewriting it, and I have to wonder how I'm going to change this.
I also need to see some of the subbed Sailor Moon. Its been a very, very long time since I saw much of it, and I actually like the manga better...
Oh well.
Bardock is an odd character. He's showing what Goku could have been, had he not gotten that lovely bump on the head. In the dub... well, he's not that bad. In the sub, he's a typical Saiya-jin.
So, should I change the characterization or not?
Hard to say...
Pre-CLAMP, I would have kept going the way I have, but since I've seen and read a lot of that, I have to say the scale of my writing has changed. Its a heck of a lot more tragic. I'm trying to decide which direction I should go, especially since I promised a friend.
-_-;;
I guess I should just write, and see how it turns out, though I really DO need to refresh myself on the source material. I guess that's the best I can do for the moment.
Back to the comparison between the two- sub and dub.
I think I might like the dub better- simply because it shows a moment of redemption. I LIKE that kind of thing, even though its not what was originally intended. The original was interesting- and it gives me an idea of how I should take things now.
But... as for sheer enjoyment- the dub was better. Which is weird, to say the least. Though the chatter does drive me nuts...

the bloodlines is my second fave fic you have written, the other is the "A Special Training" story line. i'd say base usagi off of manga as she is more human, and shows her roots better, where as anime made her into a joke. base bardok on the sub for the before usagi and on the dub for after if you plan to rewright, that way you get the best of both worlds. i hope things get better for you.
may the goddess bless you and yours.
