On a tangent, I am so glad that Lindsay Ellis and all the big names that came out of Channel Awesome have gotten well outta that toxic shadow of the Walker brothers. After that #Change the Channel thing came out, I couldn't in any good conscience support that brand.
But Lindsay especially is a break out that's managed to take what was initially a gimmick (Ie reviewing the "girl stuff" that NC didn't want to do) and taking these great video essays on everything from film making or thematic consistency and I'm here for this.
(My personal fave video is the one on RENT, which she summed up every criticism I've ever had about that show without just pissing on about LOL THING BAD, but just how the entitlement of the main lead especially just doesn't gel well with the rest of the story about suffering and rising above a circumstance you cannot control.)
Same. I was also gutted to hear about Jewario. That was... I wish they had caught him and punished him before he committed suicide.
As for Lindsay Ellis, I agree! She has some very good ideas, and I enjoy seeing how she has progressed as a film maker along with insightful essays. And, well, I'd never actually seen RENT, but I really appreciated how she dissected the Transformers movies through feminist theory. Michaela Banes should have been the central character- and from what I've heard about Bumble Bee, it's basically that. And mentioning how framing is more important than text in a visual medium, and it helped me to understand a lot of what I've seen in other media, too. And she had pretty much all of the same objections I did to Bright. It had SO much potential and then it was just lacking so much in worldbuilding and I just... sigh.
JW was thankfully never one of the ones I got into, but it was still disgusting how the Walkers "accidentally" let slip who the hell it was in an attempt to get the fire off their own ass. Like, way to give a shit about the victims and the embarrassment of his family.
And her Transformers video definitely gave me a better appreciation for Michaela Barnes from the one time I watched the first movie and Megyn Fox in general. Given some recent comments of hers, I feel like she very likely has been very fucked over as being cast as "the bimbo" in all of her films. I'm glad the Bumblebee movie seems to be giving some life to that fandom.
It really sucks how MF has been typecast. I've not seen enough of her stuff to get a feel for her acting, though I know she deserved better than what she got.
JW wasn't a contributor that I followed, though I did enjoy when he showed up in crossovers. And yeah. That it was left so obviously open to throw off the discussion? That was just gross. And cowardly. I used to think that Doug might be kinda sorta okay- he's a face on a screen, but most of the buzz around him was that he wasn't terrible- but after that? I haven't touched Channel Awesome since the news came out. Though watching the site implode was amusing. I admit that I have a taste for watching wank go down.
